Cardio To Drop Excess Body-fat ("What the Hell is this Fat Burn Zone?")

If you have ever worked with a personal trainer or jumped on a treadmill yourself, I am sure you have seen or heard about the “fat burn zone.” In layman’s terms, this means that at this particular pace, your body is using dietary fat and stored bodyfat as its primary fuel source. Going above this pace will results in the addition of other sources of energy, which will reduce the burning of fat. The problem with the fat burn zone, is that it’s unique for everyone and sometimes hard to determine.

The best solution to this problem is to ignore the fat burn zone completely. That’s right, I said forget about it! Fat is a slow burning energy source, and who wants to wait for that?! Any certified dietician or knowledgeable athlete will tell you that by expelling more calories than what is taking in during the day, will result in weight lose. Your diet composition will determine what you lose (water, muscle or fat). A safe number would be a negative balance of –500 calories. For example, you would be taking in 2000 calories per day and burning off 2500 calories. Base your eating on how physically active you are. If you’re a soccer player who practices 5 days a week and burns on average 4500 cals per day, take in 4000 cals. Typically, this will allow you to lose 1-2 lbs per week for a physically active person. A non-active person who takes up more physical activity will lose weight at a more rapid pace. Losing more than 2lbs per week is dangerous to an active individual. In fact, if an athlete is losing more than 2lbs per week, the weight loss is water or muscle and not fat. Fat cannot be lost at such a rate.

For physically active individuals, the ideal eating plan would be a 50/30/20 spread. 50% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 20% fat. You can determine this by carrying a notebook with you for two days and writing down what you eat. Find the totals you are consuming and adjust it accordingly. Most likely you are over-eating protein and under-eating carbohydrates and fat. Remedy this by reducing the portions of your meat and adding additional carbohydrates during the day. To add fat, add more vegetable oil to your diet. Personally, I take two tablespoons of olive oil on a daily basis.

Before you jump up on the treadmill, stair-climber, etc., think about why you are there. You are there to burn excess calories. You can do this by working at a moderate pace at an extended period of time, or kick yourself up to the next level for much less time and leave the gym early. Regardless, both levels accomplish the same goal.

Proper Technique- The Art of Building Quality Muscle

Proper technique is almost as important as eating when it comes to packing on muscle. You see it all the time, the dude, in the gym screaming at the top of his lungs, back arched and compensating with his whole body, just to look like he is lifting more weight. Common offenders flock to the bench press and bicep curls to look good in the gym. I don’t know about you, but I would rather look good on the beach and I don’t much care for how I look in the gym. I am the guy you see without the matching shorts and T-Shirt combo. No “UnderArmor” or fancy sweat suit. I am the dude in some plain shorts, a ripped up T-Shirt and some ratty old tennis shoes. I am there to train, not to look good or make an impression. I don’t tend to go to the “hook up” gyms though, so I guess if you wish to pick up chicks, you might want to look the part. While I am on a rant, what is with all of the fat and out of shape personal trainers. I am telling you, there are a ton of them. If I am going to be a personal trainer, I am surely going to look the part. I mean come on, that is your job. I figure as a supplement company owner, it is my job to at least look big. I don’t have great genetics for being lean, but I can at least train hard and get big for my customers. A piece of advise, you don’t need a personal trainer if you start training right and eating healthy. Today’s machines are designed to give you a near perfect workout, all that is missing is the drive and proper form.

Anyway, that isn’t the point of this article… Proper training is key to solid growth. Your habits in the gym can be the difference between a rock solid, defined physique and lots of time in the gym with no results. It took me a lot of years to realize this, but now that I know the secret, I have never looked more muscular. I recently read an article with Tony Freeman where he was expounding on the value of proper form. I agree 100%! It isn’t about the sheer amount of weight I can lift, it is about my form. That is what builds muscle and gives near perfect definition. I am telling you to drop down the weight and do a proper set. I like the lower weight and 3 seconds down and 3 seconds up with a one second squeeze at the top. This won’t look so impressive, but it will sure build a defined dense muscle. Make sure you do a full range of motion or a near full range (I like to not bottom out, leaving tension on the muscle during the whole set) for best results and do a full one second squeeze at full contraction. This simple technique will add immediate gains to that old workout routine and give you the absolute best chance of building the size and definition you desire. Doing the absolute maximum you can put on a machine with poor form is useless and counter productive. Use weight you can manage with out cheating. This simple technique of proper form followed with full squeezing at contraction will give you the best chance to build the form you want.

Should Bodybuilders Take Vitamins?

Absolutely! Bodybuilders need supplements more than the average person because we put such a heavy burden on our bodies daily. Also, we may tend to drift into anabolics (both legal and illegal) that carry some pretty heavy side effects. So, what is a good vitamin regimen for the average bodybuilder? I am about to give you what I think is the best supplements that a bodybuilder can take in order of importance. First, you want to take a GOOD multi and just because it comes in a PACK doesn’t mean it is good. Find one from a reliable health food store and have them suggest a good one. Make SURE IT DOESN’T CONTAIN IRON IF YOU ARE A MAN! I happened to LOVE Iron Free Green Source from Vitamin World (available online). It has a high dose of Vitamin C along with chelated minerals and solid doses of everything you need. Second, you need to take a good Vitamin E product, not something in the value isle at your grocery store. Vitamin E has advanced past what you get in a supermarket, there is a new version of vitamin E called High Gamma E. I am not going to explain how it works, just understand that it is a much better form of vitamin E. Vitamin Shoppe carries their own brand of High Gamma Vitamin E (also available online). The next thing that I feel is most important for good health is a solid Fish Oil supplement. Fish Oil is amazing and protects your heart, liver and brain from damage and decay. You can’t take just one though and expect to see any benefit. Fish Oil is cheap and you need to take at least 6 gel caps per day. Steroid users should be taking 12 capsules per day to ward off the liver and heart issues. Now that we have the basics covered, we can move on to more exotic supplements for anti-aging and joint repair. CoQ10 is a enzyme co-factor that is great for keeping your heart and brain healthy and is overall a very good supplement for anyone interested in anti-aging (30-100mg per day). ALA or Alpha Lipoic Acid is even better because this anti-oxidant is also used by body builders to make insulin more active! It actually acts like some prescription insulin potentiators which is a fancy way of saying it makes insulin more effective at carrying nutrients into your body (200-500mg per day with meals). Unfortunately I am sitting here with wrist wraps on while I type this because my wrists are killing me. I guess I shouldn’t under estimate the value of healthy joints, which is why I suggest that ALL bodybuilders take a good Glucosamine and Chondroiton supplement. Watch out for the ones that use Glucosamine HCL instead of Glucosamine Sulfate. You want Glucosamine Sulfate, since that Sulpher molecule is necessary and is the form all of the positive studies used. I am starting 1500mg of Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitan Sulfate per day so I can get back to lifting without pain. There is nothing more sad than seeing an older bodybuilder that hasn’t kept his joints in good health. Finally, if you do take steroids or even just for the health benefits, drink plenty of Pomegranate juice (also available as a supplement, just DO NOT get the one with ellagic acid). Don’t just pick any of them off the shelf, many are “cut” with grape juice which is empty carbs. Vitamin Shoppe has an excellent Pomegranate Extract Juice that can be ordered online. What will this do for you? Well, it shrinks the prostate, cleans clogged arteries and reduces oxidation in the body. It’s truly the drink of champions and NECESSARY for bodybuilders that take anabolic steroids. Well, that wraps it up and I hope that this helps you choose supplements that will keep your health in check. There is no amount of money that can replace a healthy body, so make sure you budget for some good supplements in your quest to get huge!

How To Pick A Quality Sports Supplement

(why GMP should matter to you)

I must warn you of something very dangerous that is a plague on the supplement industry. It’s called NO STANDARDS. Did you know that unless a company uses GMP certified manufacturing, you have no way of knowing the quality and amount of the ingredients in your supplement?

Think I am bullshitting on how wide spread this is? Think of a really good protein bar that hit the market in the last 4 years. Notice that they probably don’t taste like that any more? I can think of three examples off the top of my head (not naming names of course). One was a rich gooey peanut filled bar that hit the market like a monsoon! Ever have one now (3 years later)? You get a hard, dry piece of crap that tastes like garbage. How about my favorite caramel apple bar? Yum they were good with dripping pieces of caramel and nice chunks of apple. I had one the other day and oddly enough there was no caramel, hard apple chips and the bar was a rock. So, without taking down the supplement industry and opening my self up to lawsuits, you the consumer, need to really insist on a new standard for supplements, one that ensures you get what you pay for. The government (about one of the few things they are doing right) is about to issue mandatory GMP certification for dietary supplements, but that is still 1-3 years off, so I HIGHLY suggest you buy ONLY GMP certified today.

GMP is a government standard that assures quality and accuracy in your supplements. A word to the wise, buy ONLY GMP certified supplements, since if you don’t there is no way to know what you are putting into your body. Trust only people that use GMP certified labs to produce its supplement line, so you can believe that the product contains EXACTLY what is on the label.

If you buy some off brand “bargain” supplement, you could be getting saw dust for all you know, and you have not only wasted time but money too! Look for GMP certification (on the bottle) for all of your supplements and nutritional needs. Don’t think it doesn’t happen. There are whole web sites designed to expose supplement companies who do not meet label claims and some of your most popular brands can test out to contain none of the ingredients that you THINK are in the bottle. Trust only the government GMP certification to ensure quality.

Think it doesn’t happen? We just made a new supplement that includes the super nutrient Beta Alanine. We ordered hundreds of kilograms of Beta Alanine and our GMP certified manufacturer called us and flagged 25kg of “stuff” that was not Beta Alanine. We paid good money for this product, but had we not tested, it could have been anything in that 25kg drum. This stuff happens! Just look at the recent issues with pet food. If you didn’t follow it, pet food made with Chinese protein was killing innocent pets. The manufacturers had no idea why until they tested some brands and found that the protein was “contaminated” with something that made it weigh more yet hurt the pets. Why would Chinese manufacturers do this? Well, if the additive weighs more in the same volume, they can charge the same for including less protein in their shipment. This stuff happens and the only remedy is GMP certification. When we made our Methyl 1-Alpha product we had to ship back FIVE batches until we had a product pure enough to make it into our formulations. I STRONGLY encourage you to look for a GMP logo on every supplement you purchase. If not, you may at best be throwing your money down the drain or at worst putting something harmful into your body!

Ok, I am off my soap box for a bit, but it ticks me off that quality companies spend lots of money to make sure their products work, only to get knocked off by people that use low grade manufacturing which is not GMP certified and can contain potentially half the ingredients listed on the bottle. We all pay a lot for our supplements, and I expect that companies would want GMP certification. Ask yourself why they don’t!
